Common Problems for Gutters

Though some gutters may be made using high-quality and durable material, they are affected by a few problems. Let’s explore some of the problems that are associated with gutters.

Clogs

Clogs are the most frequent problems affecting the gutter systems. Overtime leaves and sticks accumulate in the gutter blocking the waterway. At first, you may not notice because the dirt is usually little but it reaches a point where the water starts pooling. In some instances, it may penetrate the roofing causing damage.

Dirt also attracts pests that build homes inside the gutters and downspouts. Cleaning your gutters during fall and spring prevents the mess. These are the best times since leaves and debris will have dropped in previous seasons posing blockage problems.

Sagging

Loosened or far placed fasteners can lead to gutters pulling away from the roof or sagging. When it rains, the weight of collected water can put excess pressure on the gutters with poorly placed spikes resulting in sagging. Overtime, the fasteners may loosen from the fascia and some fall off, and the gutter eventually pulls away.

Repairing the gutter involves hammering the loose spikes back, replacing the lost ones and adding more if they are not enough. You can also solve the problem fastening the gutter using screws.

Leaks

Constant water promotes rusting leading to corrosion and weakening of the gutter. After a period, holes and cracks form on the affected parts. When you realize there are holes in the gutter, you can fill them with caulk or waterproof sealant.

Leaks can also occur when fasteners loosen. It doesn’t matter the type of fasteners used, all can slacken and the gutter bend allowing water to flow over. The fascia and areas surrounding the building can be damaged in the process. If the water amount is large, pools form on the foundation creating a nuisance. Checking the fasteners periodically, hammering the loose back, and replacing the lost spikes can prevent such issues.
